The HMS orchestra and chorus will perform three diverse works in the concert on Saturday 7th March 2020 in the Haslemere Hall at 7.30 pm. The orchestra will perform Benjamin Britten’s Soirée Musicales based on themes by Rossini. The orchestra will be joined by the chorus and two wonderful soloists, Janice Watson and Jon Stainsby for Vaughan Williams masterly Dona Nobis Pacem. Premiered in 1936 at a time when the world was facing another war. Having seen at first hand the death and destruction caused by World War I, Vaughan Williams uses his music and poems and biblical sayings to plead for peace. The third piece in the March concert is Elgar’s Sea Pictures. Originally written in a higher key the Sea Pictures were transposed for the contralto Clara Butt in 1899.
The conductor is James Ross.
