The Haslemere Musical Society’s May Concert has two exciting works. The Shostakovich Violin Concerto had its premiere in 1955 when the renowned Soviet violinist David Oistrakh was the soloist. The Musical Society is fortunate to have Fenella Humphreys as the soloist in a concerto which requires expert virtuosity.
Carmina Burana is Carl Orff’s best known work. It reflects the composer’s interest in medieval German poetry. The poems, written in Latin and an early form of German, have infectious rhythms and simple harmonies. The HMS orchestra and choir will be joined by three excellent soloists, Susan Young (soprano), John Pierce (tenor) and Keel Watson (baritone) as well as choristers from two local schools, Woolmer Hill and Rodborough.
