Live from Teatro Regio Di Torino

Composed in 1859, UN BALLO IN MASCHERA (A Masked Ball) drew its original inspiration from the circumstances surrounding the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden at a masked ball in Stockholm in 1792. Censorship problems caused Verdi and his librettist to move the place and period of the narrative to Boston in the late 17th century, where the central figure becomes Riccardo, Earl of Warwick, the Governor appointed by the English crown. Whatever its setting, the work is one of Verdi’s most passionate and immediate, vivid in characterization and swift in dramatic action.
