While ensconced at her in-laws’ estate, beautiful young widow, Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) decides to secure for herself a new husband.  Her matrimonial inquiries place her twixt three men: the young and debonair Reginald DeCourcy, the rich yet famous Sir James Martin, and the devishly handsome but married Lord Manwaring.  But a woman so fervent in her pursuits as Lady Vernon is unlikely to allow such trivialities to complicate matters.
