Based on an incredible true story, heartwarming comedy-drama ‘Philomena’ is a compelling tale of human love, loss and life, documenting one woman’s quest to track down her long-lost son.

Philomena (Judi Dench) searches for her adult son, who was taken away from her decades ago when she was forced to live in a convent.

Described as a bittersweet comedy, the film tells the tale of Philomena Lee who, after falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was whisked away by the nuns to America for adoption.

Philomena spent the next 50 years searching for him in vain before meeting journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), who embarked on a quest with her to find her son. Directed by Stephen Frears, it is based on a screenplay written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope from a book entitled ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’ by Martin Sixsmith. Coogan said: “The film is a comic tragedy or a tragic comedy. It’s about two very different people, at different stages of their lives, who help each other and show that there is laughter even in the darkest places.”

Based on the book by BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith, ‘Philomena’ is directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen).
