An account of a few weeks in the life of hellraising Welsh poet Dylan Thomas as he embarks on a disastrous tour of American universities in the early 1950s, this stylish film features a towering performance from newcomer Celyn Jones as Thomas, and a nicely subdued turn from Elijah Wood as his harassed companion John M. Brinnin.
Shot in sumptuous black and white, and elegantly scripted with an ear for the rich poetry of Thomas’s work, this is both an intriguing biopic and an arty mood piece, rich with a sense of period and moments of heightened magical realism.
