When painter Gerda Wegener asked her husband to fill in for her female model, the end result was a hugely successful portrait. Creating the character ‘Lili’, she asked him to model for her again having been so pleased with how she painted him and he soon found himself settling into the role.

The two decide to introduce Lili to society, and she quickly becomes very popular. When Gerda spies her husband sharing a kiss with another man, she realises that he is no longer the man she married.

Lili feels more herself than ever before and makes the decision to seek out a more permanent solution. With sex reassignment surgery still just a futuristic fantasy, Gerda fears for Lili and the two are left to face an almost impossible choice.

This dramatic and moving film is inspired by the true story of Lili Elbe and the relationship between her and her wife, Gerda. It is directed by the Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) and is based on the novel of the same name by David Ebershoff.

Starring Alicia Vikander (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Gerda and Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) as Lili, The Danish Girl is a heart-breaking story of love, change, and being true to yourself.
