Based on the best-selling novel, director Derek Cianfrance has adapted this moving meditation on love and loss. Emotionally lost after the war, lighthouse operator Tom (Michael Fassbender) falls in love with Isabel (Alicia Vikander). Isabel desperately wants to become a mother but is unable to and just when her anguish is at its deepest, a boat washes up on the shore with a dead man and a distraught baby in it. Their decision to bring up the girl as their own daughter takes on profound ramifications when a story of a mother whose family went missing comes to light.
