The Royal Ballet’s superb reinterpretation of its signature work returns to Covent Garden. The baby Princess Aurora is cursed to sleep for 100 years. Only a prince’s kiss can break the spell. First staged in St Petersburg in 1890, ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ offers a perfect blend of Marius Petipa’s stunning choreography and Tchaikovsky’s passionate, intense music. It also has a special place in the history of the Royal Ballet. This was the ballet with which the Company triumphantly reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, with Margot Fonteyn dancing the role of Aurora. To mark the Company’s 75th birthday in 2006, Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revived that landmark production. Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original set designs are re-imagined by Peter Farmer. In addition, the ballet now incorporates new choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton. It’s a continuously evolving work that celebrates the past while looking to the future.

Because this is a live stream, the start time is under the control of the broadcaster so please arrive in good time. Late arrivals will only be admitted at the discretion of the management.
