Lynne Taylor-Gooby (past Principal of the Royal School) will consider Jane Austen’s final work in relation to her other novels. A number of familiar themes recur and, in this novel more than any other, with the impact of significant political events of private lives being a major feature. If any reader still believes that Jane Austen wrote exclusively about trivia and romance – they will be in for a big surprise.
