On 31 May 1916, 250 rival warships of the Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy fought the only major fleet action of the First World War. Dreadnought battleships and battlecruisers were tested in battle for the first time and both sides claimed victory – but the results continue to be debated a hundred years later. The talk will outline the four main phases of the battle and the controversy over what happened. Rodney Atwood read history at McMaster University, Ontario, and Churchill College, Cambridge, served three years in the Royal Tank Regiment and is the author of several books on military history.
At Haslemere Museum, tickets £5
