Modern Europe was, in part, shaped by the 16th Century Protestant Reformation which resulted in not only a religious revolution, but also political, cultural and intellectual upheavals within and between states. The role of Martin Luther and John Calvin in shaping the religious arguments will be examined as will the religious wars which resulted from the divisions their teachings produced. John Jackson was a Senior Lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for 18 years, has served in the Royal Army Educational Corps for 27 years, was a lecturer at Reading University in the Graduate Institute of Political and International Studies and currently teaches each summer at the Cambridge University Summer School.
