Towards the end of the nineteenth century Hindhead was a flourishing bohemian colony and the centre of a building boom. Typical of newcomers to the area were the Marshall family, who bought land at Hindhead and built ‘their country cottage’ – which is now the Hindhead Music Centre – living there from 1889 – 1921. Dr Marion Dell‘s talk, which builds on her previous work, The Rise and Fall of the English Switzerland, illustrates the social and domestic life of the family, their friends and neighbours and is based on extracts from Mrs Marshall’s unpublished journal and archived photographs.
