The Hermitage is her Legacy
Haslemere Decorative and Fine Arts Society lecture
This lecture by Mrs. Pamela Halford traces the extraordinary life of Catherine the Great and her passion for collecting Paintings,
sculpture, gold and diamond boxes and cameos (she had 10,000 gems). Catherine studied avidly and her interest in the arts blossomed. After the coup that brought her to power, she made her initial purchase in 1764 of 250 paintings, which became the foundation of her superb collection. With agents in major cities, and no monetary restrictions, she was able to outbid her rivals and buy up important collections
At Haslemere Hall, open to all, members and non-members alike. Free of charge.
