Talk: Artists of the Haslemere Area 1859 – 1914 – a Golden Era with Sarah Bain

For centuries, fear of encountering Hindhead’s vagabonds and sudden swirling mists on the Portsmouth Road scared newcomers away from the whole Haslemere area. The arrival of the railway in 1859, however, heralded a new era with authors and artists flocking to the area.

Over the last three years Sarah Bain, Honorary Vice-president of Haslemere Educational Museum, has undertaken extensive research on the artists, some of whom were household names in their time, and tells their story. Thanks to a generous donation to acquire new artworks, many of them are represented in the Museum’s May/June exhibition.
