How having a home at Amesbury School in Hindhead “was the chief factor in enabling me to do what I did towards winning the war”. Monty the man, was conceited, impossible, and loathed by many, especially those to whom he reported. He fell out with some of his staunchest supporters, yet was loved by his men and was arguably the finest field commander of the twentieth century. Victor in North Africa, Commander in Chief of Operation Overlord, he was later one of the principal architects of NATO. Between 1943 and 1948 Amesbury School was his home. Using as his source, 162 letters to the Headmaster and his wife, eye witness accounts and discussions with his grandson, the third Viscount Montgomery.
