Laura Ponsonby, our speaker, is the great granddaughter of Hubert Parry the Composer of ‘Jerusalem’, ‘l was Glad’, ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’ and many other inspiring works. Laura lives at Shulbrede Priory in Lynchmere, where Parry frequently used to stay with his elder daughter Dolly and her husband Arthur Ponsonby (Laura’s grandparents). Parry was enchanted with the 12th century priory and wrote a series of pieces for piano called The Shulbrede Tunes. Laura took part recently in a TV film called ‘The Prince and the Composer’ presented by Prince Charles, who is a great admirer of Parry’s music (he also was enchanted by the Priory). Laura has long been associated with The Haslemere Natural History Society and is currently their Vice-President .
