Performed by Waverley String Ensemble & Haslemere Singing Studio

This event is at St Christopher’s Church

The Waverley String Ensemble & Haslemere Singing Studio combine forces in a concert performance of Purcell’s first opera “Dido & Aeneas”. Directed from the harpsichord by Michael Veazey. The lovers are sung by Amanda O’Brien (mezzo soprano) and Philip O’Brien (tenor) with Eleanor Rastall (soprano) taking the role of Belinda with chorus and smaller roles sung by the Haslemere Singing Studio. Ishani Bhoola leads the strings in a concert specially commissioned by the 2015 Haslemere Festival.

Everything seems to be perfect: Dido and Aeneas love each other; the whole country is in favour of the union. Yet, in a world where evil spirits and fate rule arbitrarily, love is doomed. Mistrust, jealousy and suicide ensue. With some of the most famous last words in opera history, Dido ends her life: ‘Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.’

This event is at St Christopher’s Church, (concert only) or £22.50 (with a curry at Shahanaz).
