The Haslemere Musical Society’s Spring Concert for Orchestra and Chorus starts with Bruckner’s Te Deum. This work was premiered in Vienna in 1885 and Bruckner called it the pride of his life.  Certainly it is a most uplifting piece for four soloists and chorus.  Perhaps even more uplifting is the other work in this concert.  Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 in D Minor, popularly called ‘The Choral’, is the composer’s final symphony completed in1824 and is one of the best-known works of classical music.  The symphony was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony.  The words are sung during the final movement by four soloists and a chorus.  They were taken from the poem ‘Ode to Joy’ written by Friedrich Schiller with a few introductory words written specifically by Beethoven. The Symphony is one of the most often played in the world and it is heart-rending to know that at its premiere in Vienna in 1824 the audience applauded five times through standing ovations, handkerchiefs thrown in the air and raised hats and hands so that although Beethoven could not hear at least he could see the applause. The concert will be conducted by James Ross with four excellent soloists.
