The Haslemere Musical Society’s May Concert is a delightful mix of music guaranteed to bewitch all musical tastes. The Symphony No 9 ‘From the New World’ was composed by Antonin Dvoṙák in 1893 during his visit to the United States of America. He was interested in Native American music and African-American Spirituals and is known to have said ‘I am convinced that the future of music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies.’ Together with the symphony the programme has Gershwin’s Overture Girl Crazy, the choral version of Delius’ La Calinda Florida Suite, songs by Whitacre, Lauridsen and Barber and a newly commissioned work for choir and orchestra by Clive Osgood.
The concert is conducted by James Ross
