The Haslemere Musical Society’s Spring Concert for Orchestra and Chorus comprises two outstanding works, one by Rossini and one by Schubert. Rossini is best known for his operas. He composed thirty eight in all and weirdly he had completed them by the age of thirty eight. After that he never wrote another opera. However, he did compose the Stabat Mater which has operatic overtones and will be performed by the Chorus and four excellent soloists, Susan Young (soprano), Alison Kettle (mezzo-soprano), John Pierce (tenor) and Keel Watson (baritone) with appropriate operatic majesty. Majesty is the word which best describes Schubert’s Symphony No 9 in C Major known as the Great. This symphony is the last to be completed by Schubert before his death in 1828. Therefore, both the Rossini Stabat Mater and the Schubert Symphony No 9 can be said to represent the two composers’ culmination of their creative output.
