BEETHOVEN Mass in C
FAURÉ Masques et Bergamasques
ELGAR Chanson de Nuit et Chanson de Matin
LEONARD COHEN Hallellujah
HANDEL Hallellujah Chorus from Messiah
PARRY Jerusalem

Prinz Esterhazy commissioned the Mass which was composed by Beethoven in 1807. The prince did not like it and it is not often performed. However, many people now consider it a long under-rated masterpiece. Fauré arranged the orchestral suite (Masques et Bergamasques) from incidental music he provided for a theatrical entertainment in 1919.

The result is a delightfully lyrical piece. Elgar’s Chanson de Nuit et Chanson de Matin provide a simple day and night contrast of styles with Chanson de Nuit being the richer of the two and Chanson de Matin the fresher. The programme is completed by two contrasting Hallelujas, one by Leonard Cohen and the other by Handel and finally the Society’s acknowledgement to Sir Hubert Parry who died in October 1918. Jerusalem is Parry’s setting of the poem by William Blake.

The programme is conducted by James Ross.
