BEETHOVEN Egmont Overture
WAGNER Prelude to Act III. Tristan und Isolde
WAGNER Wesendoncklieder
SCHUBERT Symphony No 4 in C minor

Beethoven’s Egmont Overture is often performed, unlike the play by Goethe for which Beethoven was asked to write the incidental music. The play is about Count Egmont who is bent on liberating his country from Spanish occupation. The overture gives a taste of what the play is about.

Those who enjoyed excerpts from Wagner’s Meistersinger von Nűrnberg in May will want to hear the moving music of the Prelude to Act III of Tristan und Isolde and also the songs written at the same time for Mathilde Wesendonck.

More nineteenth century music will be performed with Schubert’s Symphony No 4 in C minor. Written by Schubert when he was 19 and not performed until after his death, he called it the ‘Tragic’ and there are moments of haunting melancholy but also much youthful vitality.

The programme is conducted by James Ross
