The Haslemere Players March 2019 musical show will be the hugely successful comic opera from librettist, W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, The Gondoliers, (also known as The King of Barataria). The Players will be supporting The Hunter Centre with this production, a local charity which provides care and stimulation for those suffering with various forms of dementia.
The Gondoliers tells the story of two handsome and charming Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, who are informed that due to an error of identity when they were young boys, one of them is now the heir to the throne of Barataria.
Giuseppe and Marco are, of course, delighted with the situation and agree to share the responsibilities of governing their new kingdom until it can be ascertained which of them is which. However, matters become complicated when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive and reveal that their beautiful daughter, Casilda, was married to the future king as an infant. This news creates even more problems as Giuseppe and Marco are both newly married to the contadine Tessa and Gianetta – plus Casilda is very much in love with her father’s attendant, Luiz!
Since its premiere in 1889, The Gondoliers has delighted hundreds of audiences with its bubbly and memorable score by Sullivan. It contains not only an English idiom, but popular dance music from all over Europe, together with political satire, critical class distinctions and cynicism of the institution of the monarchy itself, cleverly tucked into Gilbert’s witty plotline.
In typical G & S fashion, all will be revealed at the end with twists and turns galore! Look forward to a night of superb musical entertainment.
