If ever there were such a thing as a timeless play, Twelfth Night would be it. In this playful yet sharp commentary on human affections, foibles and affectations, Shakespeare delivers up the clear outlines of a handful of protagonists seeking love in some shape or form, whom we are left to fill out and finish off as we see fit in our various 21st Century auditoria. The characters Shakespeare created move effortlessly from the page to their temporary homes in our town and village halls, regional theatres and the world’s emblem theatrical institutions.
Twelfth Night tells us that love is mankind’s greatest preoccupation: we spend a significant amount of time pursuing it and thinking, talking and singing about the joy, the hope, the eloquence, the recklessness, the blindness of love; and finds time to mock the deceit of self-love and prod the soft belly of imagined love that is hopeless, hapless because they relegate love respectively to the ease of self-preening and the ease of excess.
We challenge anyone not to be touched somewhere inside by this searing, soaring, beautiful play, brought to you by the Haslemere Thespians.
